After early education at Public School, Abbottabad, he graduated from the Government College, Lahore, before earning an LLB degree from the University Law College, Lahore. As a lawyer, he was first elected as member of the Punjab Bar Council in 1993 and still holds that membership. He started political activities in 1979 from the local level and was elected as member of the local union council in 1988 before being elected to the Attock District Council in 1991. Asif Ali Malik emerged on the horizon of national politics by joining the PML-N and contested election for a Punjab Assembly seat on its ticket from PP-15 (now PP-18) in 1993 but could not succeed.
The additional secretary general of the PML-N Punjab, Asif Ali Malik was elected to the Punjab Assembly from PP-15 on PML-N ticket in 1997 general elections and served as parliamentary secretary.
As a candidate of the PML-N for February 18, 2008 election from NA-59 (Attock-III) and PP-18 constituencies, Asif Ali Malik’s lost election.
